SUMMERVILLE, SC -- Brett Diakon carded a final-round 73 while James Hockman and Andrew Koenig each turned in a 74 Tuesday afternoon at the Pine Forrest Country Club as the Phoenix claimed The Citadel Invitational crown for the fourth consecutive season.
Since finishing with a share of third place at the annual spring tournament in 1998, Elon has brought home championship trophies in 1999, 2000, 2001 and now 2002. At the conclusion of Tuesday's second (and final) round action, the Phoenix (295-296--591) ended up tied for first in the 14-team event with Jacksonville (296-295--591), but captured the title in a head-to-head playoff with the Dolphins.
South Carolina (299-294--593) made a late run at the leaders, but finished third. Defending Big South Conference champion Charleston Southern (305-293--598) turned in the tournament's lowest round Tuesday, but ended up settling for fourth place.
Mark Hunsicker (69-79--148), the leader of the 75-golfer field after the opening round, slipped to a sixth-place tie with Phoenix teammate J.D. McNeill (73-75--148). Elon, runner-up in its previous three tournaments this season, did not need Hunsicker's second-round score due to key performances from Hockman (Tied 10th, 75-74--149), Diakon (Tied 14th, 78-73--151) and Koenig (Tied 24th, 80-74--154).
