Bulldogs Take Two From Phoenix

ELON, NC – Samford swept a softball doubleheader from Elon, 4-3 and 5-1, Saturday afternoon at East Field.

In the first game, the Bulldogs struck once in the second inning and twice in the third to forge an early 3-0 advantage. Back-to-back home runs by Jessica Swearengin and Danielle Concepcion opened the bottom half of the third and pulled the Phoenix within 3-2.

Samford tacked on one more run in the fifth when Sarah Godfrey singled home Angela Bednark, stretching the Bulldog edge to 4-2. Concepcion singled home Lori Notaro in the sixth frame, ultimately deciding the game’s final score.

Godfrey (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Deanna Resmondo (2-for-3) and Amber Fuller (2-for-4, run, SB) all turned in multi-hit performances for Samford in the opener. Meanwhile, Concepcion (3-for-4, run, 2 RBI, HR) and Swearengin (2-for-2, run, RBI, double, HR, BB) paced the Phoenix.

The Bulldogs outhit Elon 10-8 while the Phoenix stranded 10 runners to nine for Samford. Elon committed the game’s lone error.

Erin Landsburg (8-13) scattered three earned runs on eight hits and five walks to earn the game one victory. She also fanned two Phoenix during her seven innings in the circle.

Amanda Zenter (5-11) was charged with the loss, surrendering three earned runs on 10 hits and two walks in seven frames. She also fanned five Bulldogs.

In the second contest, Samford (15-21) punched in three runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth to fashion a commanding 5-0 advantage. The Phoenix (9-25) came up with a score in fifth frame, but could muster no more.

Dana Saffles (2-for-3, run, double) and Michelle Dickey (2-for-3, run) led Samford, which outhit the Phoenix 9-8 in the nightcap. Megan Borgaard (2-for-2) had the lone multi-hit performance for Elon, which left eight runners on the basepaths to seven stranded for the Bulldogs. Both teams committed one error.

Fuller (7-8) pitched all seven innings for the game two victory, allowing one earned run on eight hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. Shannon Courtney (0-6) was chased after three innings, giving up three earned runs on five hits with one base on balls and no K’s in the loss.

Elon is off until Thursday, when it hosts Radford in its Big South Conference opener. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. at East Field.
