TROY, AL -- Coach Sue Leonard's volleyball team posted a 3-1 victory over Lipscomb before falling to Bethune-Cookman 3-0 Saturday at the Trojan Labor Day Classic at Troy State.

With Saturday's results, the Phoenix (1-2) finished 1-2 in the two-day tournament, inching Leonard (299-201 in her 15th season at Elon) one win within her 300th career coaching victory.

Emily Hayes (10 kills, 10 digs, eight service aces), Laura Griffin (11 kills), Maria LaBrutto (11 kills), Kate Hart (26 assists, 18 digs) and Katie Newby (17 assists) led the Phoenix in its 30-23, 26-30, 30-19, 30-17 triumph over Lipscomb.

Hayes (14 kills, 13 digs) and Hart (29 assists) paced the Phoenix charge in Elon's 36-34, 30-26, 30-28 loss to Bethune-Cookman. Griffin and LaBrutto both represented the Phoenix on the all-tournament team.

Next weekend, Elon travels to Richmond, VA to compete in the Virginia Commonwealth Invitational. The Phoenix battles VCU at 7 p.m. Friday before facing Mercer (10 a.m.) and Hampton (2 p.m.) Saturday.
