MT. PLEASANT, SC -- Tony Meyers' goal in the 52nd minute proved to be the game-winner as second-seeded College of Charleston downed seventh-seeded Elon 1-0 in the first round of the Gift of Life/Southern Conference Men's Soccer Championships at the Patriots Point Soccer Complex in Mt. Pleasan, SC.
Meyers' goal came nearly 6:30 into the second stanza after the Cougars (12-3-3) sustained an attack in the offensive zone. The deciding goal was tallied when Meyers knocked in a cross from Scott Milroth at 51:27. College of Charleston was able to hold off an Elon (6-11-1) attack late to preserve the win.
The Phoenix and Cougars each managed seven shots, but College of Charleston held a slim 2-1 edge in shots on goal. Elon's Fabyan Saxe and Anthony Catalano each fired two shots to lead the Phoenix.
Taylor Saxe logged all 90:00 in net, making one save. Keith Wiggans earned the victory for the Cougars after going the distance in goal.
College of Charleston advances to the semifinals on Friday where the Cougars will face the winner of the UNC Greensboro/Georgia Southern match.
