ELON, NC – Juliena Gigon tallied 15 kills and 14 digs – for the night’s lone double-double – as Elon downed North Carolina A&T 30-28, 24-30, 30-21, 30-18 in non-conference volleyball action Tuesday night at Alumni Gym.
Gigon (at right) also collected a pair of service aces as the Phoenix (4-7)
improved to 3-1 at Alumni Gym. The four-game match witnessed 18 ties, including nine in the first game. There were 12 lead changes, including six in the opening game.
In the first game, Elon forged a commanding 15-9 advantage before the Aggies rallied with a 14-7 run to claim a 23-22 edge. The Phoenix arose again, outscoring NCAT 8-5 the rest of the way to capture the opening round.
In the second game, the Aggies used a 7-2 spurt to turn an 8-7 deficit into a 14-10 advantage, a lead they never relinquished. In the third, the Phoenix turned a slim 18-16 edge into a 27-18 cushion via a 9-2 surge. In the decisive game, Elon broke open a 7-7 deadlock with a 20-7 run en route to a commanding 27-14 lead.
The Phoenix received key performances from Emily Hayes (15 kills, two service aces), Ashley Ruckert (11 kills), Kate Hart (43 assists, 13 digs) and Mary Kate Spear (14 digs). NCAT (5-8) was led by Stefani Eddins (11 kills), Hannah Gruber (18 digs), Arlene Mitchell (13 digs), Judith Ball (11 digs) and Tara Cote (33 assists).
