ELON, NC – Furman used a balanced attack to stave off Elon 25-30, 30-22, 30-21, 30-23 in Southern Conference volleyball action – and remain unbeaten in league play – Sunday afternoon at Jordan Gym.
Julia Fredrickson put down 12 kills and Amber Montague smacked 10 for the Lady Paladins (8-9, 4-0 Southern Conference) while Emily Hayes led the Phoenix (7-10, 1-2) with a match-high 17 kills.
Elon captured the first game – which featured seven ties and four lead changes – thanks to a 10-5 run that turned a 20-20 deadlock into a 30-25 victory. In the second game, Furman used a 10-5 spurt of its own to break open a 3-3 tie and take a 13-8 advantage, never looking back en route to the 30-22 triumph.
The Lady Paladins jumped out to a 16-9 lead in game three and the Phoenix could move no closer than five points the rest of the way, eventually falling 30-21. Elon fashioned a commanding 18-10 advantage in the fourth game, but Furman used a 20-5 surge to close out the match with a 30-23 win.
Liz Hilliker, Whitney Purser and Michelle Cauldwell each smashed four service aces for the Lady Paladins. Kate Hart tallied 48 assists and Mary Kate Spear registered 14 digs for the Phoenix.
Elon next plays at Western Carolina at 7 p.m. Friday. Furman hosts UNC Asheville Wednesday at 6 p.m.
