Hard-Fighting Phoenix Falls to North Carolina

ELON, N.C. -- The Elon Phoenix put up a fight, but the North Carolina Tar Heels got two second half goals to break open a 1-1 tie and down Elon 3-1 in non-conference men's soccer action on Wednesday night in a match that benefited The V Foundation. The loss dropped Elon to 4-6-3 on the season. North Carolina improved to 4-6-2.

After the start of the match was delayed 20 minutes due to heavy rains, Michael Harrington got the scoring started at 8:51 when Andrew Rhea dropped a rebound to Harrington who beat Elon's Taylor Saxe for the goal.

The Phoenix evened the score at one when Brett Paschall converted his third penalty kick of the season at 9:58, beating Ford Williams to the lower left corner of the goal. The PK was awarded when Ted Odgers upended Blake Wertz in the goal box. The teams would go to the break even.

In the 73rd minute the Tar Heels broke the tie when Marcus Storey headed a Harrington pass past Saxe. Storey would find the back of the net for the second time in the period when he broke through the Phoenix defense and scored unassisted at 87:57.

On the evening, Saxe collected five saves, while Williams hauled in four. The Tar Heels held a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks and a 12-10 edge in total shots. Shots on goal were 8-5 in favor of North Carolina.

Elon will head to Triad rival High Point for a Friday night contest that will kick off at 7:00 p.m. North Carolina will host South Carolina Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.

The match was a benefit for The V Foundation and a portion of the ticket proceeds, as well as all the proceeds from a silent auction, will be presented to The V Foundation.
