Elon Downs N.C. A&T in Four Games

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Emily Hayes had 17 kills and five service aces, while Emily Lucci turned in a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs to lead Elon (14-10) to a 3-1 (30-24, 27-30, 31-29, 30-25) victory over North Carolina A&T (9-15) in volleyball action in Corbett Sports Center on Wednesday night. With the win, Elon ties its win total from last season.

Hayes and Lucci combined for seven of the 17 Phoenix kills in game one. But the Lady Aggies took game two behind Arlene Mitchell (nine kills) and Brendan Chatman (four kills, 10 assists).

In the pivotal game three, the Phoenix trailed 29-25, but fought off four match points to tie the game, then got a kill from Britney Westphal and a solo block from Lucci to earn the set.

The Phoenix then cruised through the final set, breaking a 15-15 tie with five straight points served by Hayes. Lucci and Hayes landed two kills apiece down the stretch as Elon broke open the set with a commanding 28-20 lead. Hayes would later end the match on a set from Natalie Moore, who finished the night with 31 assists. MK Spear led the defense for the Phoenix with 21 digs.

Mitchell had a double-double with 21 kills and 15 digs for the Lady Aggies. She also served six aces. Teammates Krystal Cooper tallied 18 digs and Lauren Walker notched 17 digs while posting seven kills apiece. Chatman finished with 35 assists, six kills and 11 digs.

The two teams were evenly matched throughout the contest, as they connected on 53 kills apiece. Elon had 25 attacking errors and 13 service errors, compared to N.C. A&T’s 27 and 13, respectively. The Lady Aggies recorded 14 service aces, compared to Elon's 12.

The Lady Aggies will host #24th ranked Florida A&M University on Sunday, Oct. 31 in the Corbett Sports Centerat 5:00 p.m. and Elon travels to UNC Greensboro on Friday, Oct. 29 for a 7:00 p.m. match.
