Elon Women, Davidson Men Shine in Track and Field Meet

ELON, N.C. – The Elon women’s team captured 14 of 17 events and the Davidson men’s squad claimed 10 of 11 events in track and field action Saturday at Irwin Belk Track and Dr. Alan and Norma White Field. The Elon women competed against Davidson while the Davidson men faced Mars Hill. No team score was kept.

For the Phoenix, Jessica Hayden finished first in both the 200-meter dash (26.55) and the 400-meter dash (1:02.06) while Jessica Burgeson was the best in both the 100-meter hurdles (15.04) and the javelin (31.08m) and Angela Carlberg was a double winner in the shot put (11.39m) and the discus (37.01m). Elon also received first-place finishes from Rochelle Reid in the 100-meter dash (12.83), Alana Black in the 1500-meter run (4:44.84), Alice Turner in the 400-meter hurdles (1:07.36), Kimberly Adams in the high jump (1.57m), Jessica Clendenning in the pole vault (3.43m) and Brittany Boda in the long jump (4.67m).

The Phoenix entered a pair of 400-meter relay teams, which finished first and second, respectively. The winning team – consisting of Danielle Simmons, Adams, Hayden and Alice Turner – sprinted to a time of 50.28 seconds. The second-place unit – consisting of Reid, Sabrinna Faulkner, Boda and Burgeson – completed that distance in 51.33 seconds.

Elon's winning 1600-meter relay unit (Adams, Clendenning, Black and Courtney Tomaini) was clocked at 4:12.93. Other top-three finishers for the Phoenix were: Simmons in 100-meter dash (2nd/13.27) and the long jump (3rd/4.20m), Reid in the 200-meter dash (2nd/26.70), Turner in the 100-meter hurdles (2nd/15.18) and the 200-meter dash (3rd/27.49), Tomaini in the 400-meter dash (2nd/1:04.07), Lindsay Gonzalez in the 400-meter dash (3rd/1:04.50), Black in the 800-meter run (2nd/2:29.91), Kari Burger in the 3000-meter run (2nd/11:58.26), Caroline Corbyons in the 3000-meter run (3rd/12:02.09), Clara Urquhart in the 5000-meter run (3rd/19:55.41), Boda in the 100-meter hurdles (3rd/15.46), Faulkner in the 400-meter hurdles (2nd/1:14.86), Adams in the 400-meter hurdles (3rd/1:15.33), Susan Shore in the pole vault (2nd/2.92m), Sarah Buhl in the shot put (2nd/10.50m), the discus (2nd/29.25m) and the javelin (2nd/29.21m) and Julia Hicks in the shot put (3rd/8.90m) and the discus (3rd/26.09m).

The Davidson women’s squad tallied top finishes by Allie Martin in the 800-meter run (2:26.25), Carissa Skrivanek in the 3000-meter run (10:57.57) and Laura Puckett in the 5000-meter run (19:22.30). The Wildcats’ men’s team received first-place finishes from David Ritchie in the 200-meter dash (23.06) and the 800-meter run (2:02.31), Greg Scott in the 400-meter dash (51.81) and the 3000-meter run (8:55.12), Mike Anselmo in the shot put (11.35m) and the discus (25.96m), Jonathan Baker in the 1500-meter run (4:05.94) and Dave Bunge in the 5000-meter run (15:42.36).

Mars Hill’s Nathan Galloway took the javelin throw with a toss of 43.36 meters. Craig Eckstein finished second for Mars Hill in both the 1500-meter run (4:09.63) and 3000-meter run (8:59.48).
