Hayes Named to Preseason All-SoCon Volleyball Squad

ELON, N.C. – Elon University senior outside hitter Emily Hayes (Asheboro, N.C.) was named to the 2004 Southern Conference volleyball preseason team as selected by the league's coaches. The coaches named 12 players to the team, including the 2003 freshman of the year and two returning all-conference picks.

Hayes, the MVP of the 2003 squad, led the Phoenix with 480 kills (3.97 per game) and 1,213 attacks, both of which rank fourth among Elon’s single-season records. She also tallied 33 service aces, 181 digs and 60 total blocks during the 2003 season.

Hayes notched a career-high 30 kills against Western Carolina on Nov. 7, 2003, which ranks third all-time at Elon for kills in a game. She recorded her 1,000th kill during her junior season to place her seventh on Elon’s career kills list with 1,067.

The coaches also selected Elon to finish second in the North Division in its second year of membership in the Southern Conference. Appalachian State was selected as the top team in the North Division while College of Charleston owns the honor in the South Division.

The Phoenix begin the 2004 season in a tournament hosted by North Carolina State on Sept. 3 and 4.
