Phoenix, Bishops Battle to Tie

ELON, N.C. -- Elon got a goal from Douglas Boateng in the 83rd minute to force overtime and an eventual 1-1 tie with visiting North Carolina Wesleyan in non-conference men's soccer action from Rudd Field on Thursday afternoon in front of 105 fans. The tie moves the Phoenix to 0-2-2 on the season. The Battling Bishops now own a 2-0-2 ledger.

N.C. Wesleyan earned the first score of the game with some strong passing near the box by Mario Acosta and Alimany Kargbo who found Davori Husadzinovic for the score at 33:28. The Phoenix got off only five shots in the first stanza and trailed 1-0 at halftime.

The Phoenix took control of the second half, outshooting the Battling Bishops 11-6, but could only net the one marker. Boateng's goal, his first collegiate score, was assisted by Hank Miller and Junior Nombre after a long free kick near the center line from keeper Taylor Saxe.

In the extra time both teams managed to take four shots, but neither could put a ball past the keepers.

Saxe recorded four saves while going the full 110 minutes in front of the goal for Elon. Jeff Johnson also went the distance, making 11 saves for N.C. Wesleyan.

Elon managed 13 shots on goal compared to only five for N.C. Wesleyan and outshot the Battling Bishops by a 20-17 margin. Each team took six corners.

The Phoenix begins a six-match road trip next Wednesday when it heads to East Carolina for a 3:30 p.m. kick. N.C. Wesleyan will travel to Columbia Union for an 8:30 p.m. contest on Saturday.
