Elon Men Blanked at Towson

TOWSON, Md. -- Sophomore Patrick Healey scored the go-ahead goal and added an assist to lead Towson University (4-1-0) to its fourth win in a row, a 2-0 non-conference victory over Elon University (4-2-1) in the Tigers’ home opener at their Towson Center Field on Sunday afternoon. This was the first time all season that the Phoenix was blanked.

Healey gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead late in the first half when he headed in his third goal of the season off a cross by junior Sean Cunningham from the other side of the field. The goal gave Towson a lead with 5:17 left in the first half.

Healey also set up the Tigers’ second goal when he fed junior Sebastian Haensel with a pass that led to a 10-yard shot from the left side as Haensel scored his fourth goal of the season, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

The Tigers held off several late surges by Elon, which was playing its third game in the last five days. After a 4-0 start, Elon is winless (0-2-1) in its last three games.

Elon played the final 9:43 short-handed as freshman Aaron Parker received a red card.

Senior goalkeeper Zak Thompson made six saves for the Tigers as he posted his third shutout of the season. It was also the Tigers’ second shutout in a row.

Elon outshot the Tigers, 14-13. Freshman goalkeeper Kyle Boerner also had six saves for Elon.
