RALEIGH, N.C. - In a battle of unbeatens, the N.C. State women's tennis team defeated visiting Elon 7-0 Saturday night at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on the N.C. State campus. The Wolfpack collected two doubles and all six singles wins en route to the victory.
N.C. State (6-0) claimed an early advantage by winning the doubles point, thanks to victories at the top two positions as Alejandra Guerra and Shona Lee downed Kelly Fleck and Evin Prelec 8-5 at No. 1 while Agustina Arechavaleta and Neils Barringer beat Alli Benton and Elizabeth Kernodle 8-1 at No. 2. The Phoenix (2-1) received a win at No. 3 when Melissa Holland and Katie Nicholson overcame Allison Barry and Elin Stahl Johansson 9-8 (7-5).
In singles play, No. 90 Barbara Orlay (6-4, 6-1 over Prelec at No. 1), Lee (6-1, 6-2 over Fleck at No. 2), Johansson (6-1, 6-1 over Kernodle at No. 3), Barringer (6-0, 6-0 over Holland at No. 4), Arechavaleta (6-0, 6-0 over Benton at No. 5) and Arielle Von Strolley (6-0, 6-0 over Nicholson at No. 6) were all victorious.
Elon will next be in action with a 1 p.m. visit to East Carolina Thursday while the Pack will be back at it at 1 p.m. Friday at Florida Atlantic.
