Elon Takes Series at Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. -- The Elon Phoenix baseball squad split a doubleheader, but picked up the series win, against the Auburn Tigers on Sunday afternoon from Plainsman Park. The Phoenix (7-4) took game one by a 3-2 score before falling to the Tigers (7-5) by a 13-3 score in the nightcap.

In game one, Elon tallied the game's frist run in the top of the second inning when Pat Irvine's single up the middle drove in Jordy Snyder. The Phoenix tacked on another run in the third when Donny Jobe scored on a double play ball.

Auburn trimmed the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the third as Tyler Johnstone scored on a Andy Bennett single.

In the fifth inning, Elon pushed its advantage to 3-1 as Ryan Addison, who led off the inning with a double, scored on an RBI groundout from Chris Price.

The Tigers got back within one in the bottom of the fifth when Josh Donaldson came in on Bennett's double to right.

Elon starter Matt Chastain (2-0) pitched 7.0 innings and allowed both Tiger runs. Chastain allowed nine hits and one walk while fanning two. Chad Tilley threw the final 2.0 innings to earn his second save of the season.

Taking the loss for Auburn was Brett Butts (1-2) who allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks over 5.0 innings.

Auburn struck for two early runs in game two, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on doubles from Russell Dixon and Bennett. The Tigers added a single run in the third inning when Bennett homered to right.

The Phoenix got one run back in the fourth on a RBI single from Paul Bennett singled home Adam Weaver.

In the bottom of the fourth, Auburn exploded for eight runs on four hits, capped by a grand slam from Ryan Stanley.

Elon scored one run in the fifth and one in the sixth, while Auburn tacked on two more runs in the eighth frame to provide the final margin.

The Phoenix returns home for a three-game series with Siena this weekend beginning with a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
