Mountaineers Halt Phoenix Winning Streak

ELON, N.C. – Appalachian State claimed two doubles matches and four singles bouts on its way to dealing Elon a 5-2 Southern Conference women’s tennis loss – snapping a three-match winning streak for the Phoenix – Friday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

With their victory, the Mountaineers (5-2 overall, 1-0 Southern Conference) avenged a 6-1 loss at Elon in 2004 and a 7-0 home setback to the Phoenix in 2005. Elon (6-5, 1-1) dropped to 4-2 at home this season.

Appalachian State earned the doubles point when Lyndsey Free and Anja Gugger ousted Elizabeth Kernodle and Melissa Holland 8-4 at No. 2 while Salem Kirven and Victoria Moody stopped Whitney Butcher and Alli Benton 8-2 at No. 3.

The Phoenix received a win at No. 1 doubles when the Evin Prelec/Kelly Fleck combination (7-4) outlasted Frances Blanton and Monica Tomas 8-6. Elon earned singles victories at No. 1 where Prelec (6-4) outbattled Gugger 7-5, 6-4 and at No. 3 where Kernodle (8-3) foiled Kirven 6-2, 6-2 for her sixth consecutive triumph.

The Mountaineers registered singles wins by Moody at No. 2 (6-4, 6-1 over Fleck), Tomas at No. 4 (6-7 (9-7), 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 over Butcher), Free at No. 5 (6-3, 2-6, 7-5 over Holland) and Blanton at No. 6 (6-0, 6-3 over Benton).

Elon hosts seven-time defending Southern Conference champion Furman at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. Appalachian State will visit North Carolina A&T for a non-conference confrontation Thursday.
