GREENVILLE, S.C. – Elon's Justin Newton carded a one-under-par 71 in the opening round of the 37th annual Furman Intercollegiate men's golf tournament presented by Verizon Wireless Friday afternoon on the 6,800-yard Furman Golf Course.
Newton followed up his 37 on the front nine holes with a 34 on the back nine to snag a share of fifth place out of 99 participants after one round in the three-round, three-day event. Wofford's Adam Dox (37-32–69) recorded a three-under 69 to hold the individual lead after 18 holes in the 54-hole tournament.
In the team standings, the Phoenix (305) sat in 16th place out of 17 squads entering Saturday's action. Maryland (289), Samford (294), Wofford (295), host Furman (295) and Marshall (296) occupy the top five positions.
Chattanooga (299), Winthrop (301), Iowa (301), Virginia Tech (301), East Carolina (301), Charleston Southern (302), Western Carolina (303), Davidson (303), Furman's B Squad (303), Francis Marion (304), Elon (305) and Appalachian State (308) make up the rest of the field.
In addition to Newton, the Phoenix also received scores from Lance Johnson (Tied-34th/36-39–75), Jimmy Lytle (Tied-74th/40-39–79), Bennett Smith (Tied-85th/42-38–80) and Louis Rittberger (Tied-90th/38-44–82).
The second round of play is set to begin at 8 a.m. Saturday with final-round action scheduled for 8 a.m. Sunday.
