ELON, N.C. – Charlotte swept the three doubles matches and captured five of the six singles bouts en route to a 6-1 non-conference women's tennis triumph over Elon Friday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
The 49ers (10-4) received singles wins from Ofra Friedman at No. 1 (over Kelly Fleck 6-1, 6-1), Kathy Robey at No. 2 (over Evin Prelec 6-4, 6-1), Ali Piacente at No. 3 (over Elizabeth Kernodle 6-2, 6-4), Ashleigh Murray at No. 4 (over Whitney Butcher 6-2, 6-2) and Yana Stoeva at No. 6 (over Alli Benton 6-0, 6-4). The Phoenix (6-9) scored a victory at No. 5 when Melissa Holland downed Michelle Alexander 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles action, Friedman and Murray beat Fleck and Holland 8-4 at No. 1, Piacente and Koren Fleming defeated Kernodle and Butcher 8-4 at No. 2 and Robey and Stoeva decisioned Prelec and Katie Nicholson 8-4 at No. 3.
Charlotte visits UNC Greensboro at 10 a.m. Saturday. Elon returns to Southern Conference action at 1 p.m. Saturday when Georgia Southern visits the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
