SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elon University freshman
Damon Gooch (Gauteng, South Africa/Edenvale) was today honored as the Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the week ending March 6.
Gooch fashioned a 2-1 record at No. 1 singles for the past week, including a 1-1 ledger against nationally-ranked opponents. He recorded a 7-6, 6-2 victory over No. 64 Nick Cavaday of No. 33 North Carolina State University and also registered a 6-3, 6-4 victory over High Point University’s Mike Tolman.
Gooch improved to 6-3 this spring with his victory over nationally-ranked Cavaday Sunday. He also finished the week 2-1 at No.1 doubles, playing alongside partner Austin Fenn, while helping Elon to a 2-1 week as a team.
Gooch and the rest of the Phoenix (6-3 overall, 1-0 Southern Conference) will return to the court at 2 p.m. Friday, hosting league foe Appalachian State University at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
