Black (pictured left) finished second out of 23 athletes in the 1500 meters, only behind Chattanooga's Shannon Wommack, the outstanding track and field performer of the SoCon championship for the second consecutive year. Wommack (4:22.95) broke the seven-year-old championship record (4:24.14) while Appalachian State's Meghan Gaffney (4:35.68) placed third.
At 4:26.60, Black improved upon her own two-week-old school record of 4:29.09. She had just established that program plateau at the Carolina Fast Times meet on April 15 at North Carolina.
The versatile Black finished fifth in the final of the 800-meter run, clocking in at 2:14.72. She turned in the top time of Saturday's preliminaries with an Elon-record performance of 2:11.88. With her runner-up finish in the 1500 meters, Black earned All-Southern Conference honors for the third time in her career. She previously reached all-league status in the 800-meter run outdoors in 2004 and in cross country in 2005.
Dominique Price sprinted to a new Elon milestone in the 100-meter hurdles final en route to a third-place finish. Her time of 14.20 seconds eclipsed the two-year-old record of 14.29, set by Jessica Burgeson on April 17, 2004. Price's third-place finish gives her all-conference accolades for the second time this year, following a second-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles at the SoCon's indoor championship on Feb. 25.
In the final of the 400-meter hurdles, Phoenix sprinter Alice Turner (1:02.78) crossed the finish line in third place while teammate Julie McGowan (1:10.31) placed seventh. Turner achieved All-Southern Conference distinction for the first time in her career.
Anna Mae Flynn scurried to a Phoenix-record time of 18:12.28 to score an eighth-place finish in the 25-athlete field of the 5000-meter run. She surpassed her own program-best 18:21.20, established earlier this month. Elon's Katelyn Ealer (9th/18:30.62) and Alissa Wilke (11th/18:40.33) also ended up in the top half of the field.
The Elon 4x100-meter relay unit – Jessica Weaver, Jessica Clendenning, Danielle Simmons and Price – ended up in fourth place out of eight teams. The squad's time of 49.08 seconds fell less than a second shy of the two-year-old Phoenix record of 48.17 seconds.
Appalachian State (197.5 points) claimed the SoCon women's outdoor track and field title, followed by host Georgia Southern (182.5), Western Carolina (144), Chattanooga (79), the Phoenix (55), The Citadel (48), Furman (40), Davidson (39), College of Charleston (20), Wofford (10) and UNC Greensboro (2).
