Price, Black Claim Top Awards at Athletics Banquet

Having started all 52 contests so far this spring, Price (pictured right) entered the banquet with a .344 batting average, a team-high 67 hits, 41 runs scored, 13 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs and a team-high 54 runs batted in. In the process, he has helped the Phoenix to a sizzling 39-13 record (.750), including a 19-5 ledger (.792) in the Southern Conference.

Price ranks among the top five Southern Conference leaders in runs batted in, total bases, total plate appearances, sacrifice flies and home runs. He also rates among Elon's top five all-time career leaders in runs batted in, home runs, hits, runs and games played. Price has racked up a team-best 20 multi-hit games and 13 multi-RBI contests in 2006.

An All-Southern Conference athlete in both cross country and outdoor track and field this year, Black (pictured left) will represent the Phoenix in the 1500-meter run at the 2006 NCAA East Regional outdoor track and field meet on May 26-27 at the Irwin Belk Track on the North Carolina A&T State University campus in Greensboro, N.C.

Black currently holds seven Elon records – the cross country record plus four more milestones in indoor track and a pair of top marks in outdoor track and field. Black qualified for the NCAA East Regional when she raced to a program-record time of 4:26.60 on April 30, finishing in second place out of 23 runners in the 1500-meter run at the SoCon meet.

Senior men's cross country runner Daniel Quinn (Parkton, Md./Hereford) and junior women's basketball forward Nikko King (Goldsboro, N.C./Southern Wayne) were named recipients of the Robert C. Browne Memorial Sportsmanship Award. Senior men's cross country runner John Tumbleston (Boone, N.C./Watauga) and senior women's soccer midfielder Gillian Murray (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) claimed A.L. Hook Scholar-Athlete accolades. Tumbleston (pictured right) – an ESPN The Magazine First Team Academic All-American – garners a 4.00 cumulative grade-point average as a double major in physics and science education while Murray maintains a 3.92 cumulative GPA in business administration.

Since 1958, the Basnight Award has been presented annually by the family of the late Stein H. Basnight of Chapel Hill, N.C. to the most outstanding Elon male and female athletes of the year. The Browne Award was established in 1972 in memory of Elon alumnus Robert C. Browne by his sister, Pretto Browne-Crumpton, and her husband, Dr. J.L. Crumpton, and presented annually to the Elon male and female athletes who have best displayed exemplary qualities of sportsmanship. The Hook Award has been presented annually since 1975 in honor of Dr. A.L. Hook to the Elon male and female junior or senior athletes who possess the highest cumulative grade-point average with a minimum of two years of playing time at Elon.

Coach Mary Tendler's volleyball team was crowned the champion of Elon's CHAMPS/Life Skills Team Challenge. All of Elon's athletic teams competed throughout the 2005-06 academic year to earn points in seven categories – “community outreach,” “team enhancement,” “personal enhancement,” “athletes supporting athletes,” “Student-Athlete Advisory Council leadership,” “highest grade-point average” and “above and beyond.”

Most Valuable Performer recognition went to junior outside linebacker Chad Nkang (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern H.S.) in football, junior defender Junior Nombre (Vero Beach, Fla./St. Edward's School) in men's soccer, junior defender Monica Houseworth (Casselbury, Fla./Bishop Moore) in women's soccer, junior middle blocker Juliena Gigon (Pensacola, Fla./Catholic) in volleyball, Tumbleston in men's cross country, freshman Anna Mae Flynn (Banner Elk, N.C./Watauga) in women's cross country, junior Karen Clancy (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) in cheerleading, junior Elizabeth Hacker (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) in dance, junior forward Chris Chalko (South Bend, Ind./Marian) in men's basketball, sophomore forward Kitara McMoore (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) in women's basketball, senior James Pratt (Middlebury, Conn./Chase Collegiate School) in athletic training, senior men's basketball manager Jim Cross (Oxford, N.C./Kerr-Vance Academy) in service, freshman Damon Gooch (Gauteng, South Africa/Edenvale) in men's tennis, senior Kelly Fleck (Statesville, N.C./Statesville) in women's tennis, sophomore catcher Debbie Zeigler (Newton, Pa./Council Rock North) in softball, junior designated hitter Robert Rodebaugh (Marietta, Ga./Presbyterian) in baseball, sophomore Jimmy Lytle (Ocean Ridge, Fla./Pope John Paul II) in men's golf, sophomore Samantha Widmer (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands/Trinity College School) in women's golf, sophomore sprinter Dominique Price (Burlington, N.C./Cummings) in women's indoor track and Black in women's outdoor track and field.

Men's golf endowed scholarship recipients were sophomore Justin Newton (Elon, N.C./Western Alamance) with the Marvin B. Comer Scholarship (Most Consistent), freshman Jayson Judy (Gibsonville, N.C./Alamance Christian) with the Jim Hair Scholarship (Blue Collar), sophomore Lance Johnson (Gates Mills, Ohio/University School) with the L.E. “Shookie” Neese, Jr. Scholarship (Sportsmanship), senior Louis Rittberger (Chesterland, Ohio/Orange) with the Clyde and Ester Ward Scholarship (Academic Achievement), senior Bennett Smith (Bakerstown, Pa./The Hill School) with the Max Ward Scholarship (Leadership), freshman Chris Wirt (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) with the Dwight L. Dillon Scholarship (Freshman of the Year) and Lytle with the Bill Morningstar Scholarship (Coach's Award).

Women's golf endowed scholarships went to freshman Taylor Johnson (Delray Beach, Fla./Atlantic) with the A. Frank Andrews Scholarship (Freshman of the Year), junior Kelly Baytos (Warren, Ohio/Kennedy) with the James C. Scott Scholarship (Leadership), freshman Danielle Mills (Point-Claire, Quebec, Canada/St. Thomas) with the Mr. & Mrs. Hunt Ward Scholarship (Most Inspirational) and Widmer with the Clyde Johnston Scholarship (Most Improved).

Football endowed scholarships were bestowed upon senior linebacker Mark Hatch (Charlotte, N.C./Vance) with the Gene Brewer Scholarship (Mr. Consistency), senior defensive back Dwayne Ijames (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) with the Bob Dunlap Scholarship (Best Defensive Back), senior offensive lineman Jamie Ownbey (Belton, S.C./East Tennessee State) with the John Frye Scholarship (Best Offensive Lineman), junior defensive lineman Mark Jetton (Charlotte, N.C./Clemson) with the Hill-York Scholarship (Best Defensive Lineman), sophomore kicker Andrew Wilcox (Richmond, Va./Hermitage) with the Jerry Tolley Scholarship (Best Special Teams Player), Nkang with the Sid Varney Scholarship (Best Linebacker), sophomore tight end Wes Pope (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) with the D.C. “Peahead” Walker Scholarship (Coach's Award), sophomore tailback Reggie Hall (Charlotte, N.C./Vance) with the S.S. “Red” Wilson Scholarship (Best Offensive Back) and senior defensive lineman Emerson Fazekas (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) with the Zac Walker Scholarship (Academic Achievement).

Baseball endowed scholarships were received by freshman pitcher Steven Hensley (Asheville, N.C./Owen) with the Chester Huey Scholarship (Freshman of the Year), senior pitcher Chad Tilley (Charlotte, N.C./East Mecklenburg) with the Jack McKeon Scholarship (Coach's Award), senior pitcher Matt Chastain (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Christian) with the Graham “Doc” Mathis Scholarship (Pitcher of the Year), junior second baseman Donny Jobe (Vero Beach, Fla./Manatee C.C.) with the Rufus Thomas Blanchard Scholarship (Golden Glove), junior first baseman Chris Vasami (Mamaromeck, N.Y./Notre Dame) with the Harris-Such Scholarship (Most Improved) and senior pitcher Lance Cole (Asheboro, N.C./Campbell H.S.) with the Danieley Memorial Scholarship (Sportsmanship).

Endowed scholarships for women's basketball were awarded to sophomore guard Tierra Bumbrey (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) with the Luther Byrd Scholarship (Hustle Award), sophomore guard Robyn Shipley (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) with the Rachel and Bethany Ward Scholarship (Top Defense), King with the Truitt/Hagan Scholarship (Most Improved) and sophomore forward Katie Whidden (Gates Mills, Ohio/Mayfield) with the Bartley Family Scholarship (Coach's Award).

Men's basketball endowed scholarship winners were senior forward Jackson Atoyebi (Chicago, Ill./Culver Military Academy) with the I.L. “Ike” Fesmire Scholarship (Best Rebounder) and the Lloyd E. Whitley Scholarship (Expo Award), junior guard Montell Watson (Clifton Forge, Va./Allegheny) with the Bill Miller Scholarship (Coach's Award), junior forward LeVonn Jordan (Murfreesboro, N.C./Brunswick C.C.) with the C.L. Wilburn and Verna Wilburn-Lee Scholarship (Top Defense), senior forward Colin Wyatt (Williamsburg, Va./George Mason) with the C. Carl Woods Scholarship (Most Improved).

Other endowed scholarship awards were presented to junior Sebastian Bredberg (Kristianstad, Sweden/Soderportskolan Gymnasium) with the Tom Sawyer/Huck Finn Scholarship (Heart & Hustle) for men's tennis, sophomore Anuwat Dalodom (Bangkok, Thailand/Sripatum University) with the E. Thomas Parham Scholarship (Sportsmanship) for men's tennis, senior Elizabeth Kernodle (Burlington, N.C./Williams) with the R.H. Barringer Scholarship (Most Inspirational) for women's tennis, sophomore shortstop Tracey Dahlen (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) with the C.V. “Lefty” Briggs Scholarship (Heart & Hustle) for softball, junior outside hitter Ashley Ruckert (Metairie, La./Academy of the Sacred Heart) with the Florence and L.G. Matkins Scholarship (Coach's Award) for volleyball, junior forward Alisa Petitt (Milmay, N.J./Buena Regional) with the W.B. “Bill” Terrell Scholarship (Most Inspirational) for women's soccer, Murray with the Rudd Scholarship (Golden Guts) for women's soccer, freshman forward Kiki Willis (Youngstown, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney) with the L.J. “Hap” Perry Scholarship (Top Newcomer) for men's soccer, junior goalie Taylor Saxe (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) with the Roughton Scholarship (Scholar-Athlete) for men's soccer, sophomore Kelly Chencharik (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) with the Massey Family Athletic Scholarship (Sportsmanship) for women's cross country and junior Danielle Simmons (Washington, D.C./Benjamin Banneka) with the Cameron Little Scholarship (Most Improved) for women's track and field.

For athletic training, Ann Stuart Ray (Danville, Va./George Washington H.S.) was awarded the Kimberly Ann Barkman Scholarship (Support Services Award) while co-workers Evan Beckman (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle), Pratt, Sam Eisen (Durham, N.C./Riverside), Ebone' Gaskins (Oxon Hill, Md./Georgetown Visitation Prep), Amber Kelso (Chesapeake Beach, Va./Saint Vincent Pallotti) and Katie Visintine (Lewisville, N.C./West Forsyth) received the Rhodes-Ford Scholarship (Sports Medicine Award).
