Elon Volleyball to Host 'Dig for the Cure'

ELON, N.C. – The Elon volleyball squad will host its first "Dig for the Cure" night to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure as a part of its Nov. 10 match against Western Carolina.  Each team is hoping to raise $1,000 for Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

"There are so many volleyball programs involved in 'Dig for the Cure,'" said head coach Mary Tendler.  "We wanted to join their efforts and help raise money for breast cancer research."

Individual sponsors pledge money per dig earned by their team in the match, or can make a flat donation to the cause. The money raised by each team goes directly to the Komen Foundation's local affiliate in their community.

Elon is averaging 63.2 digs per match in conference play this season.

"When I first mentioned it to a few of the players this past summer, they seemed very excited to be involved in this event," said Tendler.  "When I asked Coach Dragan at Western Carolina if her team wanted to join us, her team was equally willing to participate.  Normally we compete against our opponents, it feels good to be doing something together for such a great cause."

"Dig for the Cure" was started in the fall of 2003 by Charlotte volleyball coach Lisa Marston whose mother is breast cancer survivor.  Marston started the fundraiser to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research and to provide a united community service project for the volleyball community.  This fall, 93 volleyball programs are participating in a "Dig for the Cure" match.

"We hope to designate one match each year for 'Dig for the Cure' and get more and more Southern Conference volleyball teams to join us," said Tendler.
