Phoenix Sweep Norfolk State

DURHAM, N.C. - In the opening match of the 2007 season, Elon swept Norfolk State 3-0 (30-13, 30-11, 30-10) behind strong offensive performances from senior Britany Westphal and sophomore Mandy Wilson.


In the first game, Westphal and Wilson had five kills each, with Wilson hitting .714.  The Phoenix tallied four service aces and held the Spartans to a .077 hitting percentage as they went on to win 30-13.

Elon shut down Norfolk State in the second frame, only allowing six kills.  The Phoenix went up two games to none, in part due to to Kelley Blakewood's five service aces.

Offense remained the name of the game in the final stanza as the Phoenix tallied seventeen kills and a .517 hitting percentage, taking game three 30-10.

Westphal tallied 16 kills and posted a .600 hitting percentage in the match, followed by Wilson's 12 kills (.435).  Sophomore Emily Regan logged 37 assists in the three-game set, and Elon posted 13 service aces.

Defensively, the Phoenix were led by senior Emily Lucci and freshman Lauren Copenhagen who tallied eight digs each.  Elon held the Spartans to a -.049 hitting percentage, allowing only 16 kills, and managed three team blocks.
