No. 53 Elon Falls to No. 16 Duke

DURHAM, N.C. – No. 16 Duke captured all three doubles bouts and then emerged victorious in five of the six singles flights, dealing No. 53 Elon a 6-1 non-league men’s tennis setback in the season opener for both teams Saturday night at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.

In doubles competition, David Goulet and Christopher Price staved off Damon Gooch and Philip Nemec 8-5 at No. 1, Reid Carleton and Kiril Dimitrov edged out Oscar Podlewski and Mason Schermerhorn 8-6 at No. 2 and Dylan Arnould and Alex Stone outlasted Alberto Rojas and Cody Stauffer MacDowell 8-5 at No. 3.
 
In singles action, the Blue Devils (1-0) earned victories by Dimitrov (over No. 72 Gooch 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) at No. 1), Goulet (over Podlewski 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 at No. 2), Carleton (over Schermerhorn 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3), Arnould (over Rojas 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4) and Jared Pinsky (over Kevin Beard 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6).

The Phoenix (0-1) picked up a win at No. 5 when Nemec overcame Stone by a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 margin.
