Schermerhorn Leads Elon to Victory at S.C. State

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Mason Schermerhorn topped Dmitry Lomakin 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, pacing Elon to a 5-2 non-league men’s tennis triumph over South Carolina State Wednesday afternoon at the SCSU Tennis Facility.

“Mason continues to be our most consistent player up to this point of the season,” Phoenix coach Michael Leonard said. “As our lone senior, he provides our team with the leadership that it needs.”

Elon (12-6) claimed the doubles point when Damon Gooch and Philip Nemec defeated Radek Pivonka and Gabriel Meana 8-5 at No. 1 and Schermerhorn and Alberto Rojas turned back Ivan Milivojevic and Tamas Dobrotka 8-3 at No. 2.

The Bulldogs (11-2) emerged victorious at No. 3 doubles when their duo of David Grund and Jan Langer upended Chase Helpingstine and Cody Stauffer-MacDowell 8-4.

In addition to Schermerhorn, the Phoenix received singles victories from Oscar Podlewski (over Pivonka 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2), Nemec (over Grund 6-3 6-0 at No. 5) and Helpingstine (over Dobrotka 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6). Milivojevic (over Gooch 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1) and Meana (over Rojas 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 4) won for South Carolina State.
