UNC Greensboro Edges Elon

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNC Greensboro claimed two doubles matches and three singles bouts to slip past Elon for a 4-3 Southern Conference women’s tennis triumph Thursday afternoon on the UNCG Tennis Courts.

The Spartans (10-9 overall, 4-3 SoCon) secured the doubles point when Alejandra Guerra and Arielle VonStrolley defeated Deanna Bailey and Anna Milian 8-4 at No. 1 while Valerie Behr and Erica Zabkar dispatched Paige Kensrue and Whitney Butcher 8-1 at No. 2.

The Phoenix (13-9 overall, 4-4 SoCon) picked up a win at No. 3 doubles when Hayley Wahl and team captain Jennifer Tucci outlasted Britney Cloer and Jess Eblen 8-6.

UNCG received singles victories from Guerra (over Bailey 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1), Behr (over Wahl 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4) and Zabkar (over Laura Graybill 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5) while Milian (over VonStrolley 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2), Kensrue (over Cloer 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3) and Butcher (over Courtney Akel 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 6) all won for Elon.

Western Carolina visits the UNCG Tennis Courts Friday to battle the Spartans at 2:30 p.m. The Catamounts will then visit the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center at 11 a.m. Saturday to face Elon in its home finale.
