Elon Track and Field Post 19 Top-10 Finishes

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Despite a two-hour rain delay the Elon women’s track and field team finished with 12 seasonal bests and posted 19 top-10 finishes at the UNC Tony Waldrop Invitational Saturday.

“We knew this would be a rough weekend because we had a tough week in practice,” head coach Mark Elliston said.  “We were able to use this meet to help train and prepare the team for the conference meet in two weeks.”

The list of seasonal bests started with freshman Sarah Skogen finished with a time of 26.04 in the 200-meter dash.  Junior Cara Maschi ran a 1:02.0 in the 400-meter dash.  Senior Jenny Pearce clocked a 2:26.13 in the 800-meter run to add to the seasonal bests.

Katelyn Ealer and Alissa Wilke both recorded season best and top-10 performances in the 3,000-meter run.  Ealer finished second overall with a time of 10:46.28, while Wilke ran a 10:46.94 for a third-place finish.  Junior Colleen McCarthy posted a top-five finish in the track events in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:49.74, which was good for third-place.

Also recording top-10 finishes in the track events was sophomore Jennine Strange with a ninth-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:17.80.  Catherine Rossi notched a 10th-place finish with a time of 11:13.40 in the 3,000-meter run.  Andrea March earned a 10th-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.17.  Freshman Emily Fournier finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:29.56.

Two relay team also posted top-10 finishes with the 4x100-meter relay team, consisting of Veronica Day, Lauren Hawkesworth, Skogen, and Monique Vines, finishing eighth (50.36) and the 4x400-meter relay team, made up of March, Skogen, Strange, and Taylor Shaw, clocking an sixth-place time of 4:03.47.

In the field events, Day finished fourth in the long jump with a season high mark of 18’8 ¾” I the long jump.  Day also recorded a second-place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 37”25 ¼”.  Hawkesworth earned season best and top-10 performances in the long jump and triple jump, recording a 17’8 ¾” in the long jump (8th) and finishing fifth with a 36”8 ¼” in the triple jump.

Vines placed ninth in the long jump with a season-high distance of 17”8 ¾”.  She also placed ninth in the triple jump with a mark of 35’9 ¾”.  Also competing in the long jump was Brittany Dawson who notched a season-best 16”8”.

Justine Robertson had a productive outing earning three top-10 finished and posting one season-best.  She finished eighth in the shot put before finishing sixth in the discus with a distance of 127’7”.  She finished her day with a season-best 107’0” and fifth-place in the javelin.  Rounding out the finishes for Elon was Krystal Paszkeicz who finished seventh in the shot put.

The team returns to the track April 18-19 at the Freedom Games on the campus of North Carolina A&T for the last regular-season meet before the SoCon Championships.
