MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Tracey Dahlen was named to the all-conference first team, while Jackie Gonzalez and Melanie Helterbran earned second team honors, it was announced today by the league office at the annual awards banquet held in conjunction with the SoCon Softball Championships. The teams were voted on by the league’s eight head coaches.
This marks the second year that Dahlen has earned all-conference honors. The senior from Pasadena, Md. was a member of the 2007 All-Conference team and picked up player of the week honors May X. Dahlen owns a team-leading .359 batting average with 22 RBI and 32 runs scored. She is also 20-24 in stolen bases and as an on base percentage of .429. Defensively, she owns a .955 fielding percentage, committing just 10 errors in 223 chances.
Gonzalez, a freshman from Suwanne, Ga., earned second team honors at second base. She is second on the team in batting average with a .333. She has scored 21 runs as a Phoenix and has an on base percentage of .421. In 185 chances, she has recorded 83 put outs and 95 assists. She has committed just seven errors for a fielding percentage of .962.
As the designated player, Helterbran smacked a team-leading seven home runs, which ranks in the top-five in the league, and drove in a team-high 30 runs, while crossing the plate 30 times. Helterbran also has seven doubleson the year. She owns a .504 slugging percentage and a .276 batting average this season. She was named player of the week one time this season.
Georgia Southern led the way with eight all-conference members, including four first-team and four second-team selections. Chattanooga had five players honored as did College of Charleston while Elon had three selections and Appalachian State had two. Furman, UNC Greensboro and Western Carolina each had one player honored by the coaches.
