Barefoot Excited About New Staff Hires

ELON, N.C.Elon University head coach Karen Barefoot has announced Marie Christian, Bill Broderick and Rachel Stockdale as her first Phoenix assistant coaches, completing the staff for the 2008-09 women’s basketball season.  Barefoot was named the fifth head coach in the history of the Phoenix women’s basketball program on April 7.

“I am very excited to announce the hiring of Marie Christian, Bill Broderick, and Rachel Stockdale,” Barefoot said.  “Each coach has enjoyed success at different levels of the game and brings with them a wealth of experience, passion and knowledge that I hope will translate into building this program for success!”

Christian comes to Elon after spending three years as an assistant coach at Old Dominion University.  During her three years there, Christian guided the Monarchs to three NCAA Tournaments, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2008, and three CAA titles.  At ODU, she was primarily responsible for the development of the point guards and perimeter players.  She also served as the academic liaison, scouting coordinator and film exchange coordinator.  Prior to serving at ODU, Christian was an assistant coach at the University of California at Berkeley, University of Dayton, and at Western Illinois University.

As a player at Old Dominion, Christian was the starting point guard for the Monarch’s 1985 NCAA National Championship team.  As a two-year team captain and four-year starter, she also helped the Monarchs to four consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament and four consecutive Sunbelt Conference championships.  She currently ranks third all-time at ODU in assists and was inducted in the Chicago Public League Hall of Fame in 1996 and the Illinois State Hall of Fame in 1999.  She received a Bachelor of Science degree in sports management in 1988.

At Elon, Christian will be responsible for the development of perimeter players, assist in recruiting efforts and serve as the liaison for strength and conditioning.  She will also be in charge of scheduling and scouting. as well as serve as the alumni and academic support liaison.

Broderick joins the Elon staff after serving as a head basketball coach at George Mason High School since 2003.  In his first three seasons there, he coached the boys’ team before taking over the girls’ team in 2006.  On the college level, Broderick was most recently the associate head women’s basketball coach at the University of Pittsburgh, serving as the primary floor coach for post players.  During his tenure with the Panthers, he monitored the academic progress of the student-athletes and scheduled all non-conference games.

Broderick completed his Master of Education in health and physical education from Frostburg State University in 1995.  He graduated magna cum laude from Frostburg State in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education.

He will serve as the recruiting coordinator by implementing a recruiting plan for the Phoenix.  Broderick will also work with the development of post players and assist with fundraising and marketing of the Elon women’s basketball program.

Stockdale joins the staff after spending last season at Wake Forest University as the women’s basketball team videographer.  During her tenure there, she was responsible for breaking down film and coordinating the film exchange between the Demon Deacons and their opponents.  She also provided media relations assistance during the 2008 NCAA Basketball Men’s East Regional.

Before joining the staff at Wake Forest, Stockdale worked with Sun Spots/FSN Florida as a marketing assistant where she acted as the primary contact for advertising agencies for execution and fulfillment of campaigns.  She also spearheaded street and on-site marketing at Florida State University and the University of Florida basketball and football games, as well as special events including the SEC Football Championship, the BCS Championship and the NCAA Final Four.

As a student-athlete, Stockdale was a four-year varsity letter-winner for the North Carolina State University women’s basketball team.  As a team captain, Stockdale led the Wolfpack to three NCAA Tournament appearances.  She earned a spot on the All-ACC Freshman Team and received the Peanut Doak Rookie of the Year award.  She received her bachelor’s degree from N.C. State in 2006 and was a member of the Dean’s List.

Stockdale will also be in charge of film exchange, be responsible for player development and serve as the coordinator for summer camps.  Her other responsibilities will include community outreach, working with the Phoenix Club, supervising team managers and assist with scouting and recruiting.
