Tendler Announces 2008 Volleyball Schedule

ELON, N.C. – Elon head coach Mary Tendler announced the Phoenix volleyball schedule for the upcoming 2008 season on Wednesday. The slate features 14 home matches and tournament trips to North Carolina Central, Robert Morris and William and Mary.

“Volleyball in the Southern Conference gets stronger and stronger each year,” Tendler said. “Our nonconference matches will allow us to evaluate our team and prepare us for an exciting championship run.”

The season begins on Aug. 29 when the team travels to Durham, N.C. for the Hilton RTP/North Carolina Central Tournament that includes squads from UNC Asheville, Maine, North Carolina Central and Florida Gulf Coast.

The Phoenix will then open its home schedule, welcoming Campbell, North Carolina A&T and UNC Wilmington to Alumni Gym for the third annual Elon Volleyball Classic on Sept. 5-6.

Elon will face Winston-Salem State on Sept. 16 between tournaments at Robert Morris and William and Mary. At the Robert Morris Invitational on Sept. 12-13, Elon will take on Youngstown State, Howard, St. Peters and Robert Morris. A week later, the Phoenix will battle Radford, Maryland-Eastern Shore and William and Mary at the William and Mary Tournament on Sept. 19-20.

Elon returns to Alumni Gym to host nonconference opponent High Point on Sept. 24 before traveling to Appalachian State on Sept. 27 and Western Carolina on Sept. 28 to open conference play. The Phoenix will play a total of 18 league matches in 2008.

The Phoenix will open a five-match conference homestand on Oct. 4 when it will face Furman, Wofford (Oct. 5), UNC Greensboro (Oct. 8), The Citadel (Oct. 12) and defending SoCon champion College of Charleston (Oct. 13).

Elon returns to the road for the next four matches against Davidson (Oct. 18), Georgia Southern (Oct. 19), Samford (Oct. 25) and Chattanooga (Oct. 26) before hosting Appalachian State (Oct. 31) and Western Carolina (Nov. 1). The team will conclude its regular season schedule on Nov. 13 and Nov. 15, welcoming first-year conference member Samford and Chattanooga to Alumni Gym.

The Phoenix will travel to Greensboro, N.C. on Nov. 21-23 for the 2008 Southern Conference Championship.

“With the conference tournament being held in Greensboro, it will be nice for our fans to make the short trip to support us,” added Tendler.
