RALEIGH, N.C. – Elon’s Whitney Butcher bested No. 36 North Carolina State’s Jackie Ussery at No. 6 singles, but the Wolfpack defeated the Phoenix 6-1 in the women's tennis season opener for both teams Friday evening at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
N.C. State swept the three doubles matches and claimed the first five singles tilts before Butcher overcame Ussery 6-2, 1-6, 1-0 (12-10) in the final contest of the night.
The duo of Berkeley Brock and Lenka Hojckova – ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Southeast Region – decisioned Anna Milian and Paige Kensrue 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. Neils Barringer and Diana Mortlock secured the doubles point for the Pack with an 8-3 victory over Elisa Simonetti and Daleen Kloppers at No. 2. Daria Petrovic and Pender Sessoms then posted an 8-3 triumph over Sally Wilkey and Butcher at No. 3.
In singles action, Brock beat Milian 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1, No. 87 Hojckova ousted Kensrue 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2, Barringer staved off Simonetti 7-5, 6-4 at No. 3, Mortlock topped Kloppers 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4 and Sessoms stopped Wilkey 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5.
Elon returns to action when it visits No. 60 Virginia Tech on Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 2:30 p.m. N.C. State will next face Old Dominion when the Pack hosts the Monarchs on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 1 p.m.
