Schermerhorn Named SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elon volleyball player Sarah Schermerhorn has been selected as the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for October 21, the league office announced Wednesday. The junior helped the Phoenix to a three-match winning streak with victories over Georgia Southern, Davidson and Winston-Salem State. Elon is the only school to have two student-athletes receive the honor this season, as men’s soccer player Clint Irwin claimed the award for the week of September 22.

A Colfax, N.C., native, Schermerhorn is majoring in economics with a minor in accounting and has a GPA of 3.99.

Schermerhorn tallied 21 kills for an attack percentage of .283 along with four service aces as the Phoenix moved to 18-4 on the season and 5-3 in league play. Defensively, she recorded nine block assists, averaging one block per set.

Against Georgia Southern, Schermerhorn went 11-for-23 with two errors for an attack percentage of .391. She also posted two service aces.

Schermerhorn and the Phoenix will look to add to their winning streak as they travel to Charleston, S.C., this weekend to face The Citadel on Saturday at 7 p.m., and the College of Charleston on Sunday at 2 p.m.
