ELON, N.C. – Junior volleyball player Sarah Schermerhorn has been named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III Volleyball Second Team, it was announced today by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The Colfax, N.C., native is an economics majors and holds a 3.99 GPA. She became the third Phoenix volleyball player to receive the honor and the first since Kate Hart in 2005.
Schermerhorn has made 26 starts and appeared in each match for the Phoenix this season and has averaged 2.02 kills per set. She owns a .277 attack percentage and has registered 200 kills. She is also second on the team in blocks with 83, which includes 11 solo blocks.
Ranked 42nd nationally, Schermerhorn leads the team and the Southern Conference with .41 service aces per set.
To be eligible for nomination, student-athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of their team’s games, be of sophomore standing athletically and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.3
In the midst of its best Division I season, the Phoenix will host SoCon South Division foe Wofford at 2 p.m., on Saturday, November 7. Fans are encouraged to arrive early as the team will be honoring seniors Emily Regan, Mandy Wilson and Jessica Barrow.
