Kensrue Tabbed SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elon women’s tennis player Paige Kensrue (Tampa, Fla./Freedom) was named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week by the league office Wednesday afternoon. She is the sole recipient selected from a pool of male and female athletes nominated by their sports information directors, representing eight winter or spring season sports at the conference’s 12 institutions.

Kensrue becomes the first Phoenix women’s tennis player to earn the honor during Elon’s six-year membership in the league. The junior team co-captain went undefeated on the courts last week, posting a perfect 2-0 record at both No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles over the weekend. She currently carries a 3.84 cumulative grade-point average as an Honors Fellow majoring in exercise/sport science.

The 5-7 Kensrue overcame deficits to beat East Carolina’s Varinia Soler 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 Saturday afternoon and Radford’s Mia Drobnjak 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 Sunday afternoon. Kensrue and junior doubles partner Anna Milian (Tortosa, Spain/Joaquim Bau) rallied past East Carolina’s Soler and Jessica Cook 9-8 (8-4) Saturday before dispatching Radford’s Petra Dajevic and Ivana Tomaic 8-2 Sunday.

This marks just the second time this year that a Phoenix athlete has earned SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week accolades. The first one, Elon men’s soccer player Steven Kinney (Norcross, Ga./Norcross), received the distinction back on Nov. 12, 2008. Kensrue and the rest of the Phoenix (4-3) head to Charlotte to battle the 49ers at Noon Saturday at the Phillips Tennis Complex.
