Elon Tracksters Open Outdoor Season

RALEIGH, N.C. - Emily Fournier and Amy Salek each recorded school records as the Elon track team opened its outdoor season at the Coastal Carolina/ASICS Invitational in Conway, S.C.  

Fournier shattered the Elon school record in the women's 3,000 meter run, crossing the finish line in 10:10.72, to finish second in the event.  Her time was nearly 10 seconds faster then the previous mark set in 2007. Fournier later went on to place third in the women's 1500 meter run with a time of 4:47.31, rounding out an impressive start to her outdoor track season.

Salek, a freshman, took home the lone Phoenix title in the women's 400 Meter Run.  Her time of 55.95 also shattered the previous school record by over two seconds and was more than a full second faster than the second-place finisher in the competition.  Teammate
Melissa Turowski also placed eighth in that event with a time of 59.48.  Salek later went on to finish fifth in the women's 200 meter dash crossing the line in 26.05.

Freshmen
Alyssa Girvin placed fourth in the women's discus throw and was the 3rd best collegiate overall with her throw of 40.18 meter (131-10). Teammate Justine Robertson finished the competition in seventh-place (38.33 meters).  Robertson also went on to finish fifth in the women's shot put with a best heave of 11.83 meters

Sophomore
Veronica Day placed second in the women's long jump with a best leap of 5.39 meters (17-08.25).  Teammate Monique Vines put forth an eighth-place finish, jumping 5.15 meters.  Day went on to place fifth in the women's triple jump with a distance of 11.33 meters (37-02.25).  Lauren Hawkesworth followed Day in the triple jump finishing in seventh-place with a leap of 11.17 meters.

The Elon relay teams put forth an impressive day of competition finishing in fifth and second.  The 4x100 Meter Relay team consisting of Dana Cataldo,
Monique Vines, Veronica Day and Amy Salek started things off crossing the finish line in 49.15, good enough for fifth-place overall.  4x400 Meter Relay team consisting of Melissa Turowski, Andrea March, Jennine Strange and Amy Salek placed second with a time of 3:58.36.

Junior
Andrea March placed sixth in the women's 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.47.

Sophomore
Jacqueline Beliveau placed fifth in the women's 400 meter hurdles, finishing the race with a time of 1:05.31.

Junior
Jennine Strange placed 2nd in the women's 800 meter run with a time of 2:16.98.

Rounding out the competition for the Elon track team was senior
Colleen McCarthy who finished second in the women's 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:55.94.
