Melillo Named Co-SoCon Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Elon junior catcher Mike Melillo and College of Charleston sophomore third baseman Cole Rakar have been named the Southern Conference's Baseball Co-Players of the Week for all games from March 23-29.  It is the second such award for a Phoenix player this season as outfielder Justin Hilt picked up the honor earlier in the year.

Melillo, a native of Annandale, N.J., hit .474 (9-of-19) and recorded at least one hit in all five of Elon's games this week, including a 2-1 series win on the road at Georgia Southern.  He added nine RBI and finished the week with two triples, three home runs, two stolen bases and nine runs scored.  He slugged 1.158 and posted a .565 on-base percentage.  Melillo homered twice in a one-run loss at #20 Clemson, the second multi-homer game of his career.

On the year, Melillo is hitting .330 with 25 runs scored, nine doubles, two triples, six homers and 21 RBI.

Rakar finished with a .529 batting average (9-of-17) as the Cougars went 2-2 last week.  He belted three home runs in Furman’s 18-4 victory over Furman on Saturday, becoming just the fourth player in school history to record three homers in a single game.  Rakar added an additional home run Sunday and recorded a .600 on-base percentage.  He scored eight runs and added a stole base last week.

The Phoenix returns to action on Tuesday night at East Carolina.  Game time is 6 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on 920 AM WPCM and www.elonphoenix.com.
