ELON, N.C. – The Elon men’s cross country team will open its 2009 season when it hosts the first Elon Invitational this Saturday on Elon’s South Campus course. The men will compete in an 8K race.
“Our team is quite eager to get the season started this Saturday,” head coach Christine Engel said. “The fact that we are hosting Elon’s first cross country meet on campus definitely adds to the excitement.”
The men’s team posted seven of Elon’s top times last season, including the school-record time of 25:41 ran by Will Schefer and Matt Richardson. The Elon men were picked to finish sixth in the league by SoCon coaches.
Elon will host teams from The Citadel, College of Charleston, Furman, UNC Greensboro, North Carolina A&T, Lenoir-Rhyne, Belmont Abbey and Lynchburg.
The meet will mark the first for the Phoenix this season and will help the team gear up for the Southern Conference Championship that will be held on the same course.
