Box Score

ELON, N.C. – The Elon men’s basketball team opened the newly renovated Alumni Gym in style on Monday night, posting a 103-60 victory against visiting Greensboro College in the first of two Phoenix exhibition contests for the 2010-11 season. Elon outscored The Pride 62-26 in the second half and junior guard Drew Spradlin led four Phoenix scorers in double figures with 19 points on 4-of-6 from downtown.

“In the second half, particularly in the beginning of the second half, we played our best,” commented Elon head coach Matt Matheny. “We defended well, got stops and played well in transition. We were able to play a lot of guys, which we wanted to do. We will have plenty of opportunities to learn from this game. We have a good base right now and we’ve been able to do a lot more teaching of details this year. Our veteran guys are coaching and teaching on the court.”

Freshman Jack Isenbarger had an impressive debut in the maroon and gold, scoring 12 points, grabbing seven boards and dishing off a game-high seven assists. The Phoenix racked up 23 assists on 38 buckets. Fellow rookie Lucas Troutman netted 10 points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting night, swatted four shots and pulled down five rebounds. Senior point guard Chris Long added 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting while recording three assists and four boards.

The Pride was led by forward Daren Dexter who contributed 14 points, five rebounds and four steals.

Elon used a 28-0 run that spanned nearly nine and a half minutes in the first and second halves to pull away from The Pride. After closing the first period on a 5-0 run to hold a 41-34 lead at the break, Elon came out on a tear in the second stanza, scoring 23 unanswered points and forcing 11 Greensboro turnovers before the 12:30 mark. Eight different players scored during the stretch as Elon took a commanding 64-34 advantage.

Greensboro finally broke the streak with a jumper by Adam Powell, but would never get closer than 28 over the duration of the game. Aaron Smith’s lone points of the night put the Phoenix at the century mark and gave Elon a dominating 100-56 lead with under two minutes to play.

The Pride kept it close in the first 20 minutes, capitalizing off of cold Phoenix shooting. Seventeen of Elon’s first 22 shot attempts came from long range, but the home team managed to drop only six three-pointers on a 28 percent shooting performance from beyond the arc. Greensboro scored 18 points in the paint, getting 10 points from Dexter to be within two, 36-34, with 1:50 remaining in the opening half.

Elon outrebounded the opposition 53-28, grabbing 29 offensive rebounds and netting 31 second chance points. The Phoenix forced 24 Greensboro miscues, including15 in the second half, scoring 35 points off turnovers. In the final 20 minutes, Elon scored 38 points in the paint, while holding The Pride to only eight.

Elon will host Washington & Lee on Saturday, Nov. 6 in Alumni Gym in the final tune-up before the regular-season opener at South Carolina on Friday, Nov. 12. The game time of the exhibition is to be determined based on whether the Phoenix men’s soccer team hosts a first-round Southern Conference Tournament game.
