ELON, N.C. – Elon head volleyball coach Mary Tendler has announced the addition of setter Nickie Halbert to the 2010 roster. Halbert, a native of Venice, Fla., spent two seasons at Mercer University.
"Nickie will add experience and depth to our team," Tendler commented. "She is a smart, accurate setter who will work hard to compete for a spot on the court. I like the fact that Nickie is a confident player and has high expectations for both herself and her team."
Halbert finished Mercer’s 2009 campaign with 478 assists, averaging 4.88 assists per set. The total was the second-most on the team. She also tallied 140 digs. In her first season at Mercer, Halbert appeared in 26 sets, averaging 2.77 assists per set.
During her prep career at Venice High School, Halbert received Class 5A All-State first-team distinction as a sophomore, junior and senior. During her sophomore campaign, Halbert was a member of the Florida Class 5A state championship team and was named to the Prepvolleyball.com Top Twenty Sophomores in the nation in 2006.
During her senior year, her club team, the Tampa Elite, finished second at Junior Nationals.
Tendler added, "Even though we will have three setters on our roster, each one has different strengths. With Megan returning and the additions of Nickie and Cali (Estes), I feel very good about the versatility we will have in our offense and the leadership we will have at the setter position."
Nickie is the daughter of Gary and Pamela Halbert.
