Coming off its thrilling 63-61 victory on Wednesday night at UNC Greensboro, the Elon University women’s basketball team returns to the friendly confines of Alumni Gym on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 22, when the Phoenix (12-5, 7-2) hosts the College of Charleston Cougars at 2 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for youth 12 and under. Can't make it to the game? Be sure to listen on WSOE 89.3 FM, with coverage beginning at 1:45 p.m. live from Alumni Gym.

THE SERIES: Elon and College of Charleston will be meeting for the 18th time on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars lead the all-time series 13-4 and have won the last six meetings against the Phoenix. Elon’s last victory over CofC came on Feb. 10, 2007 with a 64-58 win in Elon. The Phoenix and Cougars meet again in Charleston on Feb. 26 in the regular season finale for both squads.

ON THIS DATE: Elon has a 4-8 record all-time in games played on Jan. 22. The last time the Phoenix won a game on Jan. 22 was in 2007 with a 56-50 victory over Furman at home.

THE BAREFOOT FILE: Elon head coach Karen Barefoot enters Saturday's game with a 201-136 career record in her 13th season as a head coach, including a 29-50 mark in her third season with the Phoenix.

BAREFOOT REACHES MILESTONE: Karen Barefoot captured her 200th career victory on Jan. 16 when the Phoenix topped Wofford, 64-47, in Spartanburg, S.C. Barefoot recorded 102 victories at Apprentice School in six seasons, leading her team to the 2001 NSCAA National title and coaching a total of seven All-American players. Barefoot recorded 70 wins at Lenoir-Rhyne in four seasons, leading the Bears to their first NCAA postseason appearance and SAC title in school history, while also earning league Coach of the Year honors. In three seasons at Elon, Barefoot has amassed 29 victories.

HOME SWEET HOME: Elon continues its three-game homestand on Monday night when it hosts Appalachian State at 7 p.m. in a key Southern Conference matchup. The Phoenix will be looking to avenge its 100-67 loss to the Mountaineers on Nov. 29 in Boone, which was the Southern Conference opener for both teams. Elon has a 7-1 record at home this season.

THRILLING FINISH: With 6.5 seconds left, Ali Ford zipped through three UNC Greensboro defenders and flipped the ball up in the air as the buzzer sounded, lifting Elon to a 63-61 win over the Spartans on Wednesday night at Fleming Gym in Greensboro. Elon trailed by as many as 11 points in the win, but the Phoenix hit several key shots down the stretch and played hands-on defense to force several UNCG turnovers to help mount a late comeback. The 11-point deficit is the largest the Phoenix has overcome in any victory this season.

GOING STREAKING: With Wednesday’s win over UNC Greensboro, Elon has won seven straight Southern Conference games since starting the season 0-2 in league play. Elon has never won seven league games in a row since officially becoming a member of an athletic conference in 1977-78. Overall, Elon has won its last six games, something the program hasn’t done since the 2002-03 season when Elon won seven straight.

MATCHING AND SURPASSING: Elon matched its entire win total from last season on Wednesday with its 12th victory of the season at UNC Greensboro, while the team surpassed its entire win total in Southern Conference play from last season with its seventh win in league play.

CONFERENCE STANDINGS: With its victory over UNC Greensboro on Wednesday, Elon is now tied with Appalachian State for the top spot in the Southern Conference with a 7-2 record.

THE BENCH BUNCH: The Elon bench has been outstanding over the last seven games, outscoring its counterparts 143-73.

MOVING ON UP: Ali Ford tallied nine points in Elon’s win over UNCG on Wednesday night, putting her at 771 career points. Ford currently ranks fifth in the Southern Conference in scoring at 16.0 points per game and has scored in double figures in 33 out of Elon’s last 36 games.

BLOCK PARTY: The Phoenix recorded 11 total blocked shots in its victory at UNCG on Wednesday, putting its season total at 104 (first in SoCon). Kelsey Evans registered her third five-block game of the season in the win. Elon is averaging 6.1 blocks per game as a team.

EDUCATION DAY APPROACHING: The Elon women’s basketball team hosts the seventh annual Education Day on Jan. 27 at 11 a.m. when it welcomes Southern Virginia to Alumni Gym. The Phoenix topped the Knights last season, 83-32, on Education Day in front of a packed crowd of several local elementary and middle school students.
