Elon Falls at UNCW, 5-2

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Despite singles wins from freshmen Jordan Johnston and Bryn Khoury, the Elon women’s tennis team could not grab a victory, falling 5-2, at UNC Wilmington this afternoon. Elon is now 2-3 on the young season, while UNCW improves to 6-1.

In doubles action, the Seahawks’ Kelly Cameron and Chelsea Kahle defeated the freshmen duo of Andrea Pont Grau and Viviana Stavreva, 8-2, at number three. Johnston and sophomore Briana Berne played a tight match against Olga Blank and Angela Sekely at number one, but were defeated 8-5, which allowed UNCW to clinch the doubles point. UNCW’s Lindsay Leblang and Christina Lee later defeated freshman Frida Jansaker and Khoury at number three, 8-4. 

Moving into singles play, the Seahawks had a 1-0 advantage over the Phoenix. Highlights for the Phoenix in singles play came at the number one and three positions.

Johnston, who played at number one for the second straight match, battled with Lee throughout the first set and eventually won the match 7-6 (7-2), 6-2. Khoury won her first set against Riley convincingly, 6-3, and then received the win when Riley retired with the score at 2-3 in the second set. Johnston and Khoury are each 4-1 on the season and continue on a four-match winning streak.

In other singles action, Leblang defeated Stavreva, 6-2, 6-0, at number four, Kahle defeated senior Jessica Margolis, 6-0, 6-4, at the sixth spot, while the number two victory went to Sekely who won over Jansaker, 6-1, 6-0. The clinching point for the Seahawks came at number five  when Cameron won over Berne, 6-2, 6-3.

The Elon women will return to the courts this Friday, Feb. 18, for a 2 p.m. match at Charlotte.
