CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Elon women's tennis squad picked up a 5-2 non-league victory over the Charlotte 49ers thanks to winning the doubles point and claiming decisions at each of the top four singles positions. The win evened Elon's season record at 3-3 while Charlotte fell to 5-3.
The Phoenix won at both number two and three singles by identical 8-4 scores to take the early 1-0 lead. At number two, Elon's
Frida Jansaker and
Bryn Khoury defeated Charlotte's Gabi Vergara and Anna Ekelund while the Phoenix pair of
Briana Berne and
Andrea Pont Grau knocked off Ginny Johnson and Alexandra Zinn at number three.
The 49ers top pair defeated Elon's number one doubles team of
Jordan Johnston and
Viviana Stavreva by an 8-5 score.
Three of the six singles matches lasted three sets with Elon winning at number one where Johnston held off Zinn 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. Elon's Berne fell to Iveta Guneva at the number five position by a 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 score. At number six, Charlotte's Iveta Guneva defeated Pont Grau 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Jansaker was a winner for the Phoenix at number two, handing Andrea Rivera a 7-5, 6-3 defeat. At the third position, Khoury upended Gabi Vergara in straight sets – 6-3, 6-3. Stavreva also won a 6-3, 6-3 bout over Charlotte's Emmanuelle Briant at number four.
The Phoenix women will we right back in action tomorrow afternoon with a noon meeting at Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C.
