Elon Closes Out Regular Season at College of Charleston

ELON, N.C. –
The Elon University women’s basketball team will close out the regular season on the road on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 26, as the Phoenix (17-11, 11-8) heads to Charleston, S.C. to face the College of Charleston Cougars (10-18, 7-12). Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. inside Carolina First Arena. Be sure to listen to the action WSOE 89.3 FM with Matt Curry and Greg Brzozowski on the call, with coverage beginning live at 1:45 p.m.

THE SERIES:
Elon and College of Charleston will be meeting for the 19th time on Saturday in a series that dates back to 1981, as the Cougars lead the all-time series, 13-5. After dropping its last six meetings to the Cougars going into this season, the Phoenix needed all 40 minutes of regulation and a five-minute overtime to register a 56-49 win earlier this season on Jan. 22 inside Alumni Gym. The Phoenix used a 13-0 run with over the final five minutes of regulation to send the game to overtime, as Ali Ford hit a deep three-pointer with 1:54 left and a pair of free throws for Elon. In overtime, Ford assisted or scored or assisted on the Phoenix’s first three baskets to give Elon a five-point edge, one it would not relinquish down the stretch. Elon is 1-6 all-time in games played at College of Charleston.

LOOKING AHEAD:
Following Saturday’s contest at CofC, Elon heads to Chattanooga, Tenn. for the 2011 Southern Conference Tournament, March 3-7, at McKenzie Arena. Elon has already clinched a first-round bye in the tournament and will not play its first game until Saturday, March 5. The Phoenix could be seeded third to fifth in the tournament depending on results from this weekend’s action.

THE BAREFOOT FILE: Elon head coach Karen Barefoot enters Saturday's game with a 206-142 career record in her 13th season as a head coach, including a 34-56 mark in her third season with the Phoenix. Barefoot captured her 200th career victory earlier this season on Jan. 16 when the Phoenix topped Wofford, 64-47, in Spartanburg, S.C. Barefoot recorded 102 victories at Apprentice School in six seasons, leading her team to the 2001 NSCAA National title and coaching a total of seven All-American players. Barefoot recorded 70 wins at Lenoir-Rhyne in four seasons, leading the Bears to their first NCAA postseason appearance and SAC title in school history, while also earning league Coach of the Year honors. In three seasons at Elon, Barefoot has amassed 34 victories. This season marks her 11th winning season in 13 years as a head coach.

WRAPPING UP HOME ACTION: With 10 victories this season inside Alumni Gym, Elon tied the 2002-03 squad for the most wins at home since joining Division I. The last time an Elon team won more than 10 games at home was the 1983-84 season when the team finished with 12 home victories. Elon averaged 527 fans per game at home this season, which is the most since the program joined the Division I ranks. The team’s Feb. 19 Pink Zone game against Samford drew a record-number 1,071 fans, a single-game high for the Phoenix since joining the Division I ranks. Six of Elon’s games this season rank in the top-15 most highly attended games since the 1998-99 season.

WINNING WAYS: Elon's 17 victories this season are the most since the 2003-04 season. The program record for most wins in the Division I era is 19 by the 2002-03 squad.

FORD TRACKER: With 13 points in Elon’s last game against Chattanooga, Ali Ford has accumulated 971 career points in only her second season. With one regular season game and at least one Southern Conference Tournament game remaining, Ford will need to score 29 total points to become only the third player (Venessa Corbett and Nuggie Dixon) in Elon history to reach 1,000 points by her sophomore season. Earlier this season against College of Charleston, Ford scored 21 points and is averaging 16.0 points per game against the Cougars in three career games.

BLOCK PARTY:
Kelsey Evans’ 59 blocked shots this season are the second most in a single season in Elon women’s basketball history. Evans needs 13 more blocks to surpass Courtney Nyborg’s single-season mark of 71 blocks set in 2003-04. In only her second season, Evans has swatted 114 total shots by the opposition, good for third all-time in Elon history. The Phoenix currently ranks second in the league as a team in blocks with 150 (5.4 per game), one behind Wofford for the top spot.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING:
Going into the final game of the regular season, Elon ranks second in the Southern Conference in scoring offense (68.4 points per game), third in scoring margin (+4.0), third in field goal percentage (41.9 percent), fourth in field goal percentage defense (38.4 percent), fourth in three-point field goal percentage defense (31.3 percent), third in rebounding offense (40.8 per game), second in rebounding margin (+1.5), second in blocked shots (5.4 per game), third in steals (9.3 per game), fourth in turnover margin (+0.68) and second in defensive rebounds (26.8 per game).
