MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The Elon women’s tennis team’s three-match winning streak came to an end this afternoon as College of Charleston defeated the Phoenix, 7-0, at the Tennis Center at Patriots Point. With the loss, the Phoenix falls to 7-8 on the season and to 3-3 in Southern Conference play. The Cougars improve to a season record of 9-7 (1-0 SoCon) with the victory.
The match got underway with doubles play, where Viviana Stavreva and Andrea Pont Grau took on the Cougars’ Caroline Newman and Christin Newman at number three. The Newman sisters earned the victory over the Elon duo, 8-0. On court two, Bryn Khoury and Frida Jansaker took an early lead over Katie Lee and Kinsey Casey but eventually fell 8-5 giving CofC the doubles point. Jordan Johnston and Briana Berne played a tight match against Emma Hayman and Irene Viana but dropped the close match by a score of 8-7 (6).
In singles action, Kelly Kambourelis claimed a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Pont Grau at number six to increase the Cougars’ lead to 2-0. Johnston fell to Christin Newman, 6-3, 6-1, at number one, while Caroline Newman picked up the win over Jansaker, 6-1, 6-2, on court three to clinch the match for the Cougars, 4-0, with three singles matches still in play.
Berne played two tight sets with Viana at the number five spot but could not manage to grab the win as it went to Viana 6-4, 6-4. The Cougars added another point to the team score with Casey’s 6-2, 6-2 victory over Stavreva at number four.
At number two, Khoury won her first set against Hayman, 6-3, and then dropped the second, 6-4, for the match to head into a third set. Khoury kept the final set close but Hayman was able to pull away and take the set 6-4 for the final victory for CofC.
The Elon women’s tennis team will return to action tomorrow, March 24, for a noon match up against Savannah State in Hilton Head, S.C.
