Phoenix Rebounds with Sweep at Savannah State

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – After failing pull out a victory at Georgia Southern just yesterday, the Elon women’s tennis team rebounded in a big way by picking up a 7-0 win at Savannah State today, March 24, at the Vander Meer Tennis Center. The Phoenix improves to 8-8 on the season, while the Tigers fall to 3-13. 

The Phoenix earned the sweep in doubles action giving up only two games between the three matches. Bryn Khoury and Frida Jansaker earned a dominating win, 8-0, over Sandra Kristjansdottir and Lauren Daniels at number one. On court two, Jessica Margolis and Viviana Stavreva defeated Chandel McDonie and Shannon Howard, 8-1. Briana Berne and Kaylyn Smialek took an 8-1 victory over Davita Washington and Denisa Vanca.

In singles play, Elon won all six matches in straight sets while three Phoenix players won all 12 games in a row. Jansaker picked up the 6-0, 6-0 win over McDonie at number two, while Berne won by the same score at number four. On court six, Smialek picked up her third win of the season over Vanca, 6-0, 6-0.

Khoury improved her season record to 10-5 after defeating Kristjansdottir at the top spot, 6-1, 6-1. Stavreva played at number three for the first time this season and earned a 6-0, 6-1 win over Daniels. On court five, Margolis picked up the win for the Phoenix against Washington, 6-0, 6-2.

The Elon women’s tennis team will have a week off before traveling to Wofford on Saturday, April 2, for a noon match against the Terriers.
