Rounds 1-2
AIKEN, S.C. -- Playing its second tournament of the spring season, the Elon men's golf team posted a two-round score of 594 (298-296) on day one of the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate tournament hosted by USC Aiken. The Phoenix is in a tie for 13th with a round to play on Tuesday.
After day one, Alabama (288-277--565) holds a four stroke lead over Liberty (285-284--569) for the team lead in the 18-team event. Virginia (291-280--571) and Clemson (285-286--571) are tied for third while SoCon foe Chattanooga (280-294--574) holds down the fifth spot.
Sitting in a tie for 21st with a four-over 144 (73-71) is Elon's
Stephen Dressel who went three-under on the par-five holes. Just one stroke back in a tie for 26th is
Tanner Norton who fired rounds of 72 and 73 for a day-one mark of 145.
In the 90-golfer field, two Phoenix players sit in a tie for 77th with a tally of 154 –
John Somers (77-77) and
Jack Adkins (79-75). Rounding out the Elon contingent is
Leif Neijstrom who carded a score of 156 (76-80) over his first 36 holes.
On the individual leaderboard, Alabama's Bud Cauley fired two rounds of 66 for an eight-under 132 after day one. Cauley leads the trio of Harold Varner (East Carolina), Crawford Reeves (Clemson) and Preston Dembowiak (Liberty) by six strokes heading into Tuesday's final round.
Elon golfers will hit the course at 9:50 a.m. on Tuesday for their final 18 holes.
