Johnston Named SoCon Freshman of the Year

Full SoCon Release

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elon’s Jordan Johnston has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Freshman of the Year, the league office announced this morning. The Phoenix’s top player earns the honor after compiling a 13-6 singles record during her freshman season.

“I am really proud of Jordan and happy her efforts were recognized by our conference,” said head Elon women’s tennis coach Elizabeth Anderson. “She has made an immediate impact to our team and has done a tremendous job playing at the difficult number one position this spring. She is a very hard worker, positively determined and an awesome leader on our team."

The Snellville, Ga., native went 11-5 for the Phoenix at No. 1 singles and was 6-4 in conference play. In addition to the Freshman of the Year award, Johnston also earned a spot on the conference’s All-Freshman Team and was named first team all-conference.

This marks the third time in five years that an Elon player has earned the top freshman honor in the Southern Conference. Deanna Bailey was honored with the award in 2007, while Elisa Simonetti was the 2009 recipient.

Post-season balloting was conducted by the league’s head coaches who were not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.

The No. 6 seed Elon women’s tennis team will play the No. 11 seed Davidson in the first round of the SoCon Women’s Tennis Tournament on Wednesday, April 20, at 10 a.m. in Chattanooga, Tenn.
