Women’s Tennis Ends Losing Streak Against Davidson

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s tennis team had played Davidson 12 times prior to this afternoon’s match and had fallen to the Wildcats all 12 times. That streak ended today, April 6, at The Jimmy Powell Tennis Center as the Phoenix took a dominating 6-1 victory over Davidson. Elon improves to 10-9 on the season and 5-4 in Southern Conference play, while Davidson falls to 4-15 (0-5 SoCon).

At number two doubles, Frida Jansaker and Bryn Khoury lost their first game against Alison Rauh and Elise Held, but won the next six en route to an 8-2 victory. Viviana Stavreva and Kaylyn Smialek took an early 3-0 lead over Samantha Galainena and Stephani Synn on court three before finding themselves down 5-6. The duo fought back and won the last three games to earn the 8-6 win and clinch the doubles point for the Phoenix. At number one, Jordan Johnston and Briana Berne won easily, 8-2, over Nisha Crouser and Brites Moniz-Soares.

In singles play, Johnston and Rauh played a tight first few games until Johnston pulled away with a 6-3 first set victory. Johnston easily won the second set, 6-1, to take the win at number one. Jansaker dropped only one game her entire match, winning 6-1, 6-0, on court three against Moniz-Soares. One of the most impressive victories of the day went to Stavreva who convincingly defeated Galainena, 6-1, 6-0, at number four to clinch the match for the Phoenix.

Berne earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over Clemente at number five, while Khoury continued her great season with a victory on court two over Crouser, 6-2, 7-6.

Davidson’s lone victory came at number six as Katherine Dicconson defeated Jessica Margolis, 6-3, 6-2.

The Elon women’s tennis team will return to action a week from today, Wednesday, April 13, for its SoCon regular-season finale against UNC Greensboro. The match with the conference-leading Spartans is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. at The Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
