Davidson Defense Stifles Phoenix in Conference Clash

Box Score
DAVIDSON, N.C. – De’Mon Brooks dumped in 25 points and the Davidson defense stymied the Elon Phoenix as the Wildcats earned a 66-45 Southern Conference victory on Senior Night in Belk Arena. Davidson (21-7, 15-2) turned a four-point halftime advantage into a big win, controlling the glass and holding Elon (13-15, 8-9) to only six second-half field goals.

Elon has dropped five straight but is still tied for second place in the SoCon North Division. The Phoenix will be playing for a shot at a first-round bye in the upcoming league tournament when the Phoenix hosts division champion UNCG on Saturday evening.

Both teams shot under 40 percent, but Davidson dominated the boards and forced 15 Phoenix turnovers. The Wildcats took 20 more shots than the visitors, grabbing 20 offensive rebounds in the victory and holding a 50-35 overall rebounding advantage.

Sophomore Lucas Troutman was the lone Phoenix in double figures with 15 points as Jack Isenbarger’s double-digit scoring streak came to a halt at 11 games. Elon connected on a season-low two three-pointers.

Brooks added 10 rebounds to his stat line while big men Clint Mann and Jake Cohen netted 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Despite seeing its two top scorers in Isenbarger and Troutman on the bench for significant minutes in the first half due to foul trouble, the Phoenix trailed the Wildcats by only four at the break, 29-25.

Sebastian Koch hit a big three coming out of the locker room and Troutman added another bucket to put Elon within one, 31-30, at 18:27. Over the next three minutes, the Wildcats would capitalize off Phoenix turnovers and use a 13-2 run to break open a 44-32 lead with 15:26 on the clock.

Elon managed only one field goal and seven total points during a six-minute span and Brooks put on a show for the home crowd as the sophomore netted 19 second-half points.

After giving up the early run, the Phoenix defense buckled down and held the ‘Cats without a field goal for nearly six minutes. Elon clawed within 10, 55-45, with 6:21 remaining, but couldn’t find any offense as Davidson finished the game with an 11-0 stretch that created the final margin.

Davidson scored 21 points off Phoenix turnovers and held Elon to its second-lowest scoring output of the year.

Elon will look for a sweep in the season series against UNCG on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. Fans are encouraged to White Out Alumni Gym for the final game of the regular season. Free t-shirts will be handed out at the door (quantities limited) and Elon will honor senior Drew Spradlin prior to the contest.
