ELON, N.C. –
The seventh-seeded Elon University women’s tennis team is set for the 2012 Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Championship this week, as the Phoenix opens the tournament against tenth-seeded Wofford on Thursday, April 19 at 11:30 a.m. at the College of Charleston Tennis Center.

Thursday’s match marks the second meeting between the Phoenix and Terriers this month. The two squads met on April 1 at The Jimmy Powell Tennis Center with Elon coming away with a 7-0 victory. The Phoenix ended the regular season 15-8 overall and 5-5 in SoCon play, while the Terriers finished 6-14 (2-8 SoCon).

With a win on Thursday, Elon would advance to the second round and face second-seeded College of Charleston at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 20 at the O. Perry Earle, Jr. Tennis Center on the campus of The Citadel.

Elon is led by sophomore Jordan Johnston at number one singles. Johnston, who was named conference player of the week on March 13, finished the regular season with a 13-7 record. Johnston’s .650 winning percentage at number one singles ranks fourth in the SoCon. Along with teammate Frida Jansaker, Johnston went 19-2 at number one doubles. The duo earned a national ranking of 43 earlier in the season, the first ever national ranking for the Elon women’s tennis program.

Jansaker was nearly just impressive in singles play during the regular season, as the sophomore currently sits at 16-4 on the year after closing the regular-season on a five-match winning streak. Jansaker’s 16 victories rank first on the team and third in the league.

Viviana Stavreva heads into the conference championship riding a four-match winning streak. The sophomore ended the regular season with a 15-6 record, including a 7-3 mark against league competition. Stavreva flip-flopped between number three and four singles throughout the season, posting a combined 10-3 record in the two positions.

Rookie Maria Camara Ruiz has been impressive in her first season with the maroon and gold. Camara Ruiz sits at 13-6 on the year, including a 7-3 record in SoCon play. Camara Ruiz has a 7-1 mark at number five singles.

Last season, Elon earned the six seed in the SoCon Tournament, posting a 4-1 first-round win over 11th-seeded Davidson. The Phoenix eventually fell to third-seeded Furman, 4-0.

This year’s competition in Charleston is the 29th installment of the SoCon Women’s Tennis Championship. The winner will receive the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
