Elon Game Notes
ELON VS. COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON: Sunday marks the 18th all-time meeting between Elon and College of Charleston and the third all-time in the SoCon Tournament. The Cougars lead the series, 12-5. The two teams met just once this season on Dec. 1, 2012, inside Alumni Gym. College of Charleston managed to come away with a 56-54 victory in the game, despite only hitting one field goal make in the final 6:38 of the game. Trailing by two points with 5.4 seconds left, Elon managed to get off a 40-footer from
Austin Hamilton as time expired off the inbound underneath its basket. But unlike his game-winner against Navy last season, Hamilton’s potential walk-off shot ricocheted off the rim as the buzzer sounded, allowing College of Charleston to escape with the win.
Ryley Beaumont and
Lucas Troutman finished with 14 and 12, respectively, while CofC’s Willis Hall tallied 19 points and 12 boards.
ELON IN THE SOCON TOURNAMENT: Elon is 11-9 all-time in the Southern Conference Tournament since joining the league in 2003-04, including 1-1 against College of Charleston. Under head coach
Matt Matheny, Elon has won at least one game in the SoCon Tournament every season. This year marks Elon’s tenth SoCon Tournament. The team has won at least one game every season other than 2006-07. Elon has advanced to the title game just once, dropping a 65-49 decision to 23rd-ranked Davidson on March 10, 2008. Davidson went on to advance to the Elite Eight.
WINNING WAYS: Elon’s 21 wins this season are the most since the program made the transition to the Division I ranks and most since the 1973-74 season. The program record for most victories in a single season is 25 (accomplished three times). Only 15 teams in program history have reached the 20-win plateau, with the 1987-88 squad being the last to do so prior to this season.
Matt Matheny is only the fifth coach in program history to lead a team to 20 wins in a season.
LAST 5 GAMES: Elon is 3-2 over its last five games, posting two wins over UNCG and a win at Samford on Feb. 21. Elon’s dropped a six-point decision to Davidson on Feb. 27 after falling on the road to Chattanooga on Feb. 23.
Lucas Troutman (14.0 ppg),
Ryley Beaumont (13.4 ppg),
Jack Isenbarger (12.2 ppg) and
Sebastian Koch (11.6 ppg) are all averaging in double figures over the last five games for the Phoenix.
